Meghna gas field is located in Bancharampur upzila under Brahmanbaria District some 40 km away of northern most east direction from capital city of Bangladesh, Dhaka. Meghna gas field was discovered by Petrobagla in 1990. Total recoverable gas reserves of this field re-estimated by Petrobangla is 101 billion cubic feet (BCF). Commercial gas production was started in 1997. Gas production from one well of Meghna gas field was average 20 million cubic feet daily but due to excessive water production gas production from this field was suspended since 10 August, 2007. After re-completion of Meghna-1 well (dual completion), gas production from short string of the well commenced on 08 September, 2010. Gas production from the another string (long string) had been started on February 16, 2016 @ 5 million cubic feet daily and due to excessive water production it is closed on May 16, 2016. Now gas is being produced from short string only @ 13 million cubic feet daily approximately. Till February 28, 2023 total 80.028 billion cubic feet or 79.24% percent of reserves has been recovered.
In February 2023, average 3.32 million cubic feet of gas is produced daily from one well of the field processing through two Low Temperature Extraction (LTX) type process plants and supplied to BGSL system through GTCL pipeline. About 5.43 bbls condensate is produced daily with gas as by-product. In February 2023, average condensate/gas ratio and water/gas ratio of this field are 1.633 and 82.752 bbl/million cubic feet respectively.
